looking at upgrading the headset on my GT Avalanche 1.0 2006, being a novice i bought a Cane Creek S8 thinking that it would fit and it wont.
fella at Bike Scene in GBoro said that the GT range use "semi integrated headsets" and that the one id bought wouldnt fit, fair enough i should have checked so my fault.tried to flog me a Hope one for £65 but didnt want to pay that much too be honest before checking the going rate.
can anyone recommend or point me in the direction of some decent headsets in this range that will fit my bike as ill have to admit he was baffling me with the tecnho speak.nowt too flashy but willing to pay up to £50 for a decent one,any ideas or links?

Semi integrated should be called 'internal' or 'zero stack' really.
This would work:

yeah heard those terms on some of the online shops ctc etc
ill have a mooch tonight and see what i can find and send the other S8 back,so im looking for zero stack or internal?
saying that the one you posted up from Wiggle is similar to the S8 so may go for that if you recommend it being somewhat of a GT expert by the looks of the bikes you have!!
info appreciated anyway mate.0 -
They are fine, just have to keep an eye on the bearin.
Yep, like my GTs! Have an Avalanche too.
Zero Stack = semi integrated = internal. It can be confusing. The ones to avoid are 'integrated' and of course standard cup ones.0 -
so just to throw my hat in the ring, what is a threadless headset? Do you get threaded ones?0

Threadless headset i all the ones listed above, and seen on most modern bikes except the uber cheap ones. Threaded headsets use a threaded steerer on the fork to adjust the bearing, then the stem clamps inside it. heavy, and prone to coming loose.0

i've got one of these on my new build, it seems good for the money. Search around though can get good value if you look hard enough.http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=158880
