Wanting an '08 badly....is it worth it??

I'm pretty new to mountain biking and am instantly in love with it have been doing it now for several months and starting to really get my biking legs in gear. I'm looking to purchase my first FS bike. I have really been checking out the new '08 Yeti 575's and they look beautiful. Here is basically my style of riding:

-moderately fast through singletrack and trails in general.

- I like climbing and would like to have a good bike for that

- I like to jump around on the trail getting small-mid size air, small gap jumps, mid sized drops...as far as jumping and drops goes nothing major like a required "Dirt Jumper or whatever you would call it" required bike would need but still getting some air is fun.

- I do tend to ride aggressive, I love going fast through trails and especially down hills (now I'm not talking about downhill riding like say the Yeti 303 I believe it's called would call for but I hope you get my point).

Tell me........would the '08 Yeti 575 be a wise decision?

I'm used to using a 140mm fork and love it and it appears as if the new 575 is based on a 140. The longer travel compared to the ASR also seems like it would be a plus if I was in some rough terrain.

So basically an all around trail/mountain bike/xc bike that is still plenty strong enough for some aggressive riding on top of it all.

I don't know it almost sounds as if I'm answering my own question here to get the 575 but would like some reasurance. I just want to buy a bike that will put a big smile on my face when riding. Thanks in advance.

£3000+ is a hell of a lot to spend on a 1st full susser!

Especially as you have only been riding for a few months, it took me 20 years to get to my 1st full susser (Orange 5 £1800).

There are loads of great bikes that cost 1/2 as much as a Yeti 575, do you really need to spend £3k+ on a bike?

Orange 5, Specialized Pitch Pro, Commencal Meta 5 (just a few worth looking at)

  • Well I do have the money and it would be worth it to me but I do see your point.....but a bike this good should be with me for years. 8)

If you've got the money and you're sure you're committed enough, why not splash out?

The only disadvantage is that if you buy "the best" at teh start, you may miss out on some of the pleasures of upgrading.

But even if you do get fed up with MTBing and take up quad biking or kite-surfing instead, it means somebody else picks up a nice 2nd hand bargain!

Feck! That is a bootiful bike.

If you have the money buy it.

Don't ride it though just put it on display for evreyone to drool over.

Having had my bike nicked just last night (and it was a festering cake hole compared to the Yeti) I'd be way too terrified to run one of those!!
  • If you've got the money you can buy whatever you want. Don't expect it to make you a better rider though just 'cos it costs an arm & a leg.

Most people would agree that you're better off learning on a good hardtail but you sound like you've got a fair skills set there so go for it.

Real dream bike stuff - you $$*&^%

crap thats nice but if i was having to spend i'd get something like an orange 5 first.
  • I was going to go with a cheaper bike......actually it was going to be an 06 575 but the new one just really looks to be so much better in every way. BTW I didn't mention I'm only ordering the frame and will be building it up. This will be about a 3 to 4 month project but still have my expensive hardtail to ride until it is complete........it really motivates me to ride more and more just thinking of being on my completed yeti eventually. 8)
  • Stop trying to convince yourself and go get it. :D

    Now you're just being annoying.
  • Many many people will still outride you on £500 bikes. You can get it as long as you can live with people taking the mick out of your flash bike. A black belt could help in case someone tries to pinch it.
  • I ride for myself only...I could care less how much better alot of riders will be. I love the feeling of flying down the trails and hitting the small jumps makes me feel like a kid and free, makes me forget about all the stress in the world and the endorphine rush is incredible.......who the heck cares if I suck or not this bike will be with me for a long time I'm not expecting it to make me a better rider.......the bike does not make the rider I realize that. 8)

Either way the frame is on order. 8)
