And that glenclean is not terribly nice stuff, HF is not terribly fun to use. We make our own version of glenclean in the lab for cleaning metal tubes, really unpleasant stuff and not a pretty way to go if you spill it on yourself.

I'm surprised about noisy brake issues, I had someone of the original Avid mechanical discs (circa 2001) on my P7 before it was nicked and they never squealed regardless of weather.

Original Poster: Glad you got your juicys sorted, they should be great stoppers for everything but the most hardcore of riding...

I come into contact with enough nasty stuff at work to want to avoid it as much as possible at home! IPA seems to do the trick nicely so I'll stick with that for the time being :)

I'm very happy with the stopping power now. Fingers crossed the new pad compound helps with the noise :D

Yep, I don't get this either. I'm using Juicy Ultimates, but.... it is the same pads (and rotor) as just about every other Avid brake. There is almost never any noise from the brakes. If it is wet and muddy, occaisonally they squeek a little. If I clean with brake cleaner they squeel like a stuck pig for the first few applications (and I only mean 2 to 5 times) and then this disappears. Maybe some people are just unlucky with pads? Don't know?

  • I'm a bit concerned by the noise issue too - had Hayes HFX9's on my old Trance, and never heard a peep from them, and they worked brilliantly. When the Trance got stolen a few weeks ago, I ordered a Spesh FSR xc Expert as a replacement, which comes with Juicy 3's, so I hope they're not too noisy. I've also read that they're not the best at stopping either.

.....oh well, if they are, they'll be the 1st thing I upgrade! :)

MBR just reviewed the Orange 5 S this month, which is what I'm about to buy, that had Avid Juicy 3s and they were specifically testing it as the ultimate mud full susser. No mention of brake issues and they gave it a 9. In fact, from reading the review I can't understand why it didn't get a 10 (apart from the tyres I guess)

Mine stop very well now they're set up properly so i wouldn't be too concerned about that. I have friends who have them and they're silent so fingers crossed you're lucky with your set!

A quick update - the EBC green pads have bedded in nicely and my brakes were much quieter in the wet mud last night. I also used a touch of Copaslip on the calipers so between this and the new pads the problem seems to have been sorted :D

Now to find something else to tinker with...
