No one has seriously addressed my point about Scottish skiing though.

The Scottish skiing industry was built on optimism due to a series of very cold winters in the mid 20th century. We have probably all seen film clips of trains completely buried in snow on the Settle-Carlisle and Highland lines. In the first winter of the West Highland line there was a number of snow problems where trains got stuck, just like they do now, not because they have tried to drive through 20ft of snow drift but because there is jsut enough snow for the ploughs to be useless.

Have heard stories of Nevis being perfectly Bivvyable during winters at the start of the 20th Century.

Allegedly, much of the "proof" of climate change has never been properly peer reviewed, that the head of the UNs climate scientist group is very much a Greenie and has vested political interests in making people change their lifestyle, that the hockey stick model will produce a hockey stick regardless of the input data including that which would be expected to produce a cooling effect.

In the 70s much of the industrialised world finished with Coal, an emitter of heavy sulphur particles which when held in the atmosphere would block out the suns light and heat radiation. The change to Oil in the 70s was followed by a massive explosion in May 1980 when a volcanoes emitted more dust into the atmosphere, the result was a set of cold winters in the early 80s. However since then the small oil based particles have not been blocking light and heat from the sun, the result being that the temperature has got much warmer. Stop burning coal and oil, these particles escape and return to earth. If there are no further emitters of particles to block out the suns light and heat it may get even warmer.

Or in other words, the risk of rapid reduction in burning of fossil fuels may cause an even faster increase in global temperatures than we are already seeing. Man made climate change caused by an attempt to stop it.

Sorry AlwaysTyred, there probably won't ge any, unless the predictions about the N European end of the Thermohaline Conveyor are wrong (ie: it DOES slow down/stops fairly soon because of the fresh water getting into the N Atlantic = no Gulf Stream warming effect this far up...)
