Ultegra brake lever problem

My left hand brake lever (Ultegra set) is not working well. When braking, the first few cm's of movement on the lever have no effect. Only after about 2 cm does the brake begin to move. When riding with hands on away from hoods, the lever also starts to rattle when on bumpier road. It also doesn't feel that smooth. Can anyone help on this? I suspect it may need replacing but would like to at least try and sort it even if only to keep for second bike. Thanks in advance.

Suspect a sticking cable. There isn't much that can go wrong with the lever itself.

Agree with Joe, either a sticking cable or maybe a stretched cable! See if you can pull it through the 2cm. Rattling is usually stretched cable or if the lever is a few years old a design fault with Shimano levers.

I think all you need do is loosen it off on the caliper and pull it through with pliers, whilst holding the calipers close to the rim. Its a bit fiddly and may take a few goes, but its not a biggy - really - couple of minutes with pliers and allen key and you;re sorted.
