Powertap on MTB - reliable?

Recently rode the SPAM Winter Challenge and noticed someone had a Powertap. Tried to find them later but no joy so hope someone can help here.
I use this on my road bike but had not thought of getting one for MTB as thought it would not be able to withstand the wear and tear, especially getting submerged under water.
However if someone was using it during the Winter Challenge, which involved going through some pretty deep puddles then maybe the Powertap is tougher than I thought.
Anyway if anyone has one on an MTB, especially if the wireless 2.4, please reply with any good/bad/otherwise experience.
