Ergopower upgrade
I'm planning on upgrading the ergolevers on my new bike from Veloce to Chorus; by removing the cable from their outers I should be able to leave all the outers in place, take the levers off and re-insert the same cables back through the Chorus levers once in place, shouldn't I? I have installed ergo levers from scratch before, but thought this replacement should be easier. Any tips would be appreciated

It's easy. Make sure the gear selection is all the way to the top (i.e. slackest cable position, if you see what I mean), otherwise you won't be able to thread the inners. I bet it'll be fiddly getting the inners back through the existing outers, and conventional wisdom says you should replace the cables (the levers come with a set?), although that will mean re-taping the bars, of course.
The most difficult bit I found in this is getting the levers at equal height, and I could only do this to my satisfaction with the bars off the bike and on a flat surface.0 -
You can leave the outers in place, but unless they are fairly new I would replace them. They are the biggest single factor in smooth shifting and for the want of retaping the bars it would be a shame to splash out for top range shifters and not have them working perfectly.0

Thanks; the bike is brand new, so it seems a crying shame to replace the cables, plus the taped outers will help me locate the levers a bit I think. If it doesn't work out then I can always reinstall the outers I guess...0

Do you get a cable set with outers when you buy a set of campag shifters? I had a cable set pencilled in on my shopping list but need shifters too so would that mean I'd receive 2 sets in the post?0

I think it depends who you purchase the levers from TBH. Some places will probably advertise them cheaper - and they'll come without cables. I'd ask when you buy the levers if I was you.0 -
I ordered a set from GB Cycles at the end of their sale for £123, and apparently they come with cables, although they haven't arrived yet.0

If you don't want to lose the position of the levers, mark top and bottom with tape after having removed the handlebar covering.0

I think if they're already fitted you just remove the levers and the actual mounting brackets stay in place on the bars, so you shouldn't have any problem lining them back up again.Has the head wind picked up or the tail wind dropped off???0
