Lowlifes stole my front wheel :-(

Some lowlife stole my front wheel from my Gary Fisher Marlin Disc last night. Definitely a planned thing, used bolt cutters to go through the chain lock on the front wheel and frame. Luckily there was a D-Lock through the back wheel and frame so they didn't get the whole bike. Still very annoying and a bit expensive.

Therefore I need a replacement and a 160mm disc, as I only use it for commutting nowadays can anyone recommend a really cheap (in case it gets nicked again) replacement from an online company?

Have a look at Merlin cycles - they are doing a Deore disc hub on Mavic 317 rim with double butted spokes, handbuilt for 35 quid. Add a rotor off ebay for a tenner.

Cheers guys that is a very good price! I'll be purchasing soon. At last some sort of consolation for the loss of the wheel :(

One more question, does anyone know if the chain locks (albus ones) are resistant to bolt cuters? They clearly had no problem at all dispensing with my cable lock. I realise nothing is perfect but I'd hope to at least hold them up when they go after my shiny new wheel...

Good bolt croppers will have almost any cable or chain lock.

I had a hefty abus cable lock till some scum almost cut it through. I'm going over to D locks in the future regardless of the added weight.

have you considered the locking skewers? no need to lock the wheels up then as a key is needed to get them off. (unless they happen to have a key that will fit bit it is not too likely)

the problem with locking skewers is that its very easy to get hold of the "lock" tool and most scum goes equipped with such items, and cable cutters / allen keys to remove handlebar setups or seat/posts

I've had good luck with the Abus Steel-o_flex 1000/100 (£50) which scum have tried to cut and failed too...and the Kryptonite New York For-get-about (£100) which is seriously overbuilt and actually so heavy its a pain to carry but essential for inner city lockups

if you use such a hefty lock, take off the front wheel and lock it through the back wheel and frame to a lampost

I can confirm that a mid-range Krytonite D Lock is Bristol proof at the very least - shame the sods bent the seat stay trying to lever it off and then vandalised the bike in frustration...
