Apologies again, didn’t mean to cut you up, really had thought you had seen me ahead right on the right of you, the verbal abuse you shouted was reasonable justified, hence my apology, I guess I suddenly got into the London road user must take every last gap mentality.

I obviously hadn’t realised you could not hear me with your I-pod on and your hat covering your ears. I had no idea of your urgency hence your near miss with the mother and child on the pelican crossing 400 yards further down the road then the need to jump all those red lights.

I saw an interesting one last night, a chap decked out in high vis jacket, but no lights whatsoever. I guess in london with street lights he was reasonably visable but you owuld have thought someone who bothered to by a high vis jacket would also have bought some lights.

Not so uncommon, passed someone coming the opposite direction while heading down the Hyde Park Bike lane with a high vis jacket, no lights on a path which has limited/no lighting, really had to pray they were keeping to the left!

Do you actually have to display lights in london, I've got some dim recollection you don't have to in street lit areas where the lights are not too far apart?

I think that relates to cars - you only need sidelights on in this situation, rather than full headlights.

He was obviously so distracted by your attempts to run him off the road, it took more than 400 yards to compose himself. You should be glad he missed the people at the crossing and wasn't hit at the lights or you could have been an accessory to murder!

I suspect you are exagerating anyway, surely a ninja would have been riding a Fuji?

I agree with BentMikey, you are thinking of Car headlights.

At night your cycle MUST have white front and red rear lights lit. ...

    113
    You MUST
    * ensure all sidelights and rear registration plate lights are lit between sunset and sunrise
    * use headlights at night, except on a road which has lit street lighting. These roads are generally restricted to a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) unless otherwise specified
    * use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226)

Night (the hours of darkness) is defined as the period between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise).

[Laws RVLR regs 3, 24, & 25, (In Scotland - RTRA 1984 sect 82 (as amended by NRSWA, para 59 of sched 8))]
Training, highway design and increasing cycle numbers are important to safety. Helmets are just a red herring.

The distance between street lights for Headlights to not be required is shorter than 200m but varies depending on which Road Traffic Act applies. (I.e. The one in Scots Law or The one in English Law)

There is also thought to be a large number of incorrectly defined 30 mph zones which are technically unenforceable in England and Wales because of councils failure to apply for the correct method of making an area a 30 zone.
