Pedals, Shoes or what???

Hi all,

I have a dilemma, and not sure what the best solution is, but I am hoping that someone can help.
I have an issue with getting my feet out of some great Crank brother pedals fast enough and often fall. I am now at the point where I am very seriously considering going back to flats. Some people say to me not to do it as SPDs are MUCH better others just say "up to you". I can see a benefit with SPDs especially where you need that extra push uphill or XC and sometimes maybe to avoid the foot slipping, but I find that I will no longer push 100% because I fear that I will not get the foot out fast enough and fall, and often do. I must also say that I DO NOT like the shoes that I have as I feel they are a bit too tight and the top Velcro will not stay (due to my wide foot), and the shoes will hurt after a while I have them on (width again).
I have another 2 pair of shoes one is Flat or for flat pedals and the other for a road bike (funny enough spds, but have no issues here), but could not use this on MTB rides, too flat no grip.

After all this I have to say that prior to SPDs I had flats, rode like a maniac, and had no issues.

So what should I do? buy new shoes? buy flat pedals? or just practice more until I fall less, and therefore loose the fear and ride 100% again?????????

Sorry for the long one, but thanks for reading and answering.

If you like the SPDs stick with them, but get some new shoes that are comfortable, we dont want to see you on the health and fitness section complainig of foot problems!!! At the end of the day we all have some falls but we don't all have foot ache and its all about enjoying the ride isnt it?
  • in the end I follow the advise of some and bought some: Specialized Pro MTB Shoes, have not been in them for longer than 30 mins at the moment, but they feel, so comfortable. But as I said I am not sure how good, but should soon find out and should anyone wish for a comment on them, from a non expert, wide foot, fat chap then just ask and I will be happy to give y opinion.

I've just bought some SPD pedals and shoes to give it ago for the first time and to be honest it felt much better when trying to get my sorry ass up hill

Must admit I did unclip on the really technical down hill bits like table tops and berms on Llandegla Black run, but I'm sure that'll come with experience/kahoonas

BTW I bought a set of Bikehut Freeride pedals, SPD's within a flat and a proper flat on the other side - like crank brothers mallets - and a pair of Shimano MT41 shoes, kinda like a trecking shoe with a pretty flat grippy sole but having grips unliek skate style SPD shoes
  • I must say, as punishment I have just come back from a good ride in the dark and it was great ...!!!
I know that the shoes are not warm or ideal for cold weather and I therefore also got some overshoes, but that aside I must say that the expense was wise. Now I feel, comfortable, with the shoes and with giving it 100%, because moving the feet off the pedals has become much easier.
It is amazing what big a difference a small detail can make.
So far I rate the shoes i bought highly, but we will see with time how they change.

  • Can you adjust the tension on the pedals? If so slacken the off so your foot can come out easier.
