I have around £60 to spend on new SPD shoes.Spesh BG sport shoes always get good reviews.Would you go for these or would you advise anything else for similar money?
Is it worth spending a little extra for the comp versionwith the ratchet strap?

I've got the £80 ones with the ratchet. may be psychological but because it tightens up a treat, makes me feel more confident that the foot - shoe - pedal 3-way is going to keep happening,

Very comfortable as well. Just get waterproof socks etc if you're mud plugging

And if you're not, the roadie section is over there.....

I've got the comp too, the ratchet is annoyingly difficult to loosen on mine. I often have to resort to just pulling the shoes off.

Otherwise, I'm really chuffed with them.
  • Whats the sizing like? With my current Shimano shoes I had to go up one size, and even then they are on the narrow side..

    I'm a 44 (9.5) in the BGs and between a 9 and 10 in normal shoes.

Dunno if this helps. I think I have fairly average width feet. As usual, best to try em on.

  • I've got the non ratchet ones & am very pleased with them. I don't regret not getting the ratchet version.

Like the other chap says get some waterproof socks! Sizing seems pretty standard.

  • They are quite accurate, they do list a size chart which should be of use, if anything I would say if inbetween sizes do not got for the smaller. The ATB shoes do have a quite a wide toe box, I reviewed my BG Sport shoes here that may be of interest that I used for the first time on a cycle tour in Corsica

I have the spesh bg mtb (sport or comp...dunno, but the one with 3 velcro straps), they are very comfy, fit me well, however overshoes are essential if your going anywhere wet as lots of water can get in the top.
  • Still got my 8-9 year old Spesh sport shoes still in one piece and as comfy as the day I bought them. Got some more recent comps and carbon road shoes as well tried other brands but never found any as comfortable wouldn’t buy any other brand when it comes to shoes, take a 46 and wear size 11 trainers.
