Right - now is the time to see if I indeed have a handle on the whole UST thing (I have posted numerous times on it so apologies if I am going over old ground)

I have Mavic UST rims

Maxxis High Roller UST tyres.

Supplied with the wheels is a presta and schrader valve (I have opted for Presta as they are already installed onto the rim)

SO

Just warm the beads up with hot soapy water/lubricate the rim with washing up liquid.

Fit tyres to rim

Inflate (I have a decent track pump)

That's it?

I am probably wrong but I am under the impression as they are specific UST products I don't have to faff around with latex sealents etc? (This is my only concern)

help please - old skool geezer when it comes to tyres

    Cheesy, two things....

    1. Worth adding sealant. I also have Mavic UST rims, UST tyres and the damn things punctured after about a month or so from thorns. Bit of sealant fixed this fine and since then have had no trouble. The tyres are not puncture proof.

    2. On my old tubes the track pump + washing up liquid worked fine. I changed front tyre for winter to Continental. First inflate (to seat the tyre) was fine with the pump. Then deflated the tyre, adding sealing gung and couldn't get the damn thing pumped up again with a track pump. So poped down to LBS to get a CO2 cartridge pump... this worked like magic.

So advice; keep a CO2 pump handy (but try the track pump first to save using the cartridges unless you have to) and add some sealant.

  • Excellent - thanks.

Now the obvious question: what sealent is the best/easiest to use and how do I apply it?

Sorry for sounding like a noob on this!

Don't know if it's the best, but I've only used Stans No tube.

I poured about 60cc (2oz) into each tyre using the measuring cup that came with it. You can get an injector, but this is for valves with removable cores (mine aren't). What worked for me was to inflate the tyre first to seat it. The deflate and pull one part of the tyre bead out again to make a small lip (held open with tyre lever)... poured the sealant into this. Popped the tyre bead back in and reinflated. Spun the tyre round and then took for a quick ride to distrubute the sealant.

Inject the sealant through the valve as you say, it avoids needing to disturb the seated tyre.

I have pulled 8 thorns from my hardtail tyres this season and they are still at pressure.
