Chain jumps whilst climbing
After getting my LBS to replace the chain and cassette on my bike last September, I noticed that the chain was jumping whilst out in North Yorkshire. Foolishly I pressed on, and the result was a bent rear hanger, a smashed derailleur, a 6 hour trudge back and a very expensive repair.
Anyway, I now have the bike back. The hanger has been repaired, and I've put on a new derailleur, chain and cassette. The bike has been been stripped and reassembled.
However the problem persists. When I'm cycling along the flat, there's no problem. However when I get out the saddle to climb, or put any sort of pressure down to accelerate sharply, the chain starts to skip up and down the cassette.
Now, the LBS that did the reassembly know their stuff - they deal almost exclusively with racing backs, mostly high end. This bike is a steel frame with Shimano Ultegra kit, 10spd with a triple on the front.
Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this? I'm beginning to wonder if it's perhaps the rear hub that might be the problem. Or could it be a cable issue?
Any advice gratefully received, TVM.

I had the exact same problem. I changed the chain, cassette and middle ring which seemed to solve the problem for a short while. However it started again and it turned out to be the freehub. The pawls were sticking and the internals short so the cassette was moving very slightly under heavy load which was enough to unship the chain. Solved it by replacing the freehub. I am now having to try to solve the problem of the new freehub being slightly different spacing than the old one and getting the indexing right :x grrr.0

Hmmm, I suspect you might be right. Other people have mentioned the alignment, but as it keeps happening after each expert refit (and the LBSs I've used know their stuff) I'm inclined to rebuild the wheel (or rather have it done) and see if that sorts it.0

Had a similar problem, but the chain was skipping off the chain rings from middle to smallest when climbing or pushing hard - not funny as nearly came off! Very reputable LBS took it in to look at it, cleaned and adjusted every thing but on next ride same thing, took it back they then decided it was worn chain (1000 miles) Replaced chain but still did it occasionally LBS said this can happen with triples?
Was in another LBS about unrelated item and in conversation mentioned the problem, owner took in bike, on to the work stand made some adjustments all sorted within a minute - best bit did it for free. Never been a problem since. Have been back since and brought new bike from him - there are experts but then there are experts!0 -
I had a similar problem once (tho' less dramatic outcome) freehub pawls were sticking - problem started after I had cleaned and then replaced chain & cassette. I'm absolutely no expert tho'!0
