Converting to 10 speed

Ok, as noted in another thread, i am using downtube friction shifters, from a 6 speed bike, along with the matching rear mech. I have set up the shifters, cassette and rear mech, but can only get as far across as the 9th gear before the mech touches the spokes. Are 10 speed mechs narrower at the jockey wheel cage to prevent this??? Am i going to need to buy one to get this to work???

yes, all your drive train needs to be 10 speed stuff, including the rear mech.
