Will any Shimano Shifters work?

hi..i currently have Shimano Deore shifters on my MTB and need to replace the RH side shifters as they are knacked...my rear cassette is 9 speed, can i therefore buy any Shimano 9 speed shifters , not necessariy the Deore ones, as these seem to be the basic model that my Kona Caldera 2007 came with, without any other changes needed?, many thanks.
ps - if i can what are the benefits of upgrading compared to my current model, bearing in mind im not a weight junky, just performance matters to me

    Any 9 spd Shimano shifter will work. Also Sram Attack & Rocket shifters will work (but not the Sram X... series shifters)

    The more you pay, the lighter they get, but also a better build quality & better shifting too.

    Shimano LX or XT, or Sram Rocket would be on my list.

    cheer Andy..seen some LX for a tenner for RH only on ebay so may buy them
