'The Buyneel Philosophy'

'How did the mistake happen? "I didn't know Basso," Bruyneel said. "That can happen with new people. As I also do not know Andreas Klöden." Basso resigned from the team on May 1, 2007, and was given a suspension which runs through October 2008.

The Belgian, who has eight Tour de France victories on his palmarès as directeur sportif, is confident that he won't be equally fooled by Andreas Klöden, despite rumours that the German's T-Mobile Team may have been involved in blood-doping during the 2006 Tour de France. "Klöden told me that he had nothing to do with it. As far as I know he has never been involved in a doping affair," stated Bruyneel, who was required by the UCI to take over all existing Astana contracts when he took over the team. "We are heavily armed against possible matters from the past. If it appears that Klöden was involved in something, then we will react appropriately."

Sounds like he may be hedging against another Basso-style embarrassment?
He certainly not demonstrating any confidence in one of his 'stars'.

I suspect he knows exactly what AC and Levi will be up to in '08 but not Klodi, preparation-wise. No wonder he's worried!

As CFA pointed out, this statement is very interesting

"We are heavily armed against possible matters from the past. If it appears that Klöden was involved in something, then we will react appropriately."

Todays question is why can people accept the Riis can run a clean team, but when Bruyneel implements the same program as CSC his team is still dodgy....

He's a clever bloke (like Riis) so maybe he's seen which way the wind is blowing and is changing.
Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.
  • Some people are so jealous of Bruyneel's achievments that they will never ever approve of anything he says or does. With 8 clean tour wins under his belt I seriously doubt he gives a toss LOL
.. who said that, internet forum people ?

Riis finally came out and admitted it. Faced with overwhelming evidence and a cacophony of hearsay, yes, but he stood up and admitted his guilt and it surprised no one.

Bruyneel, the ex ONCE rider, protegé of Saiz and collaborator of Ferrari just sweeps aside awkward questions and if you ask twice, he unleashes the legal hounds.

Bruyneel made supportive statements about Basso, now the Italian's exposed, the way Bruyneel's washing his hands so fast is amusing.

So, Riis under huge pressure admitted he doped during his career. Has Bruyneel been under huge pressure to admit HE doped? I would say no.

Did Riis discuss any practises on CSC over the years? Basso and Hamilton both turned in amazing performances while on CSC and were both doping during that period. But he didn't know?

He and Bruyneel are no different. And if people can believe Riis has changed his attitude, why not Bruyneel.

I'm not saying Riis is a saint, far from it. But surely some admission from Riis is better than total silence from Bruyneel?

So if Johan called a press confernce and said "hey guys, when I rode in the 90's, I took EPO and various hormones, sorry about that" you'd have more time for him?

Yes. Maybe a few microseconds more

But if he explained more about his past, was more honest and open about cycling in general, it would help. Surely Iain, you know he has a giant cloud over him?

    So what's your view Iain?

I know he's got a giant cloud but I'm not convinced talking about it helps anyone. When Riis confessed what did you think - Was it something along the lines of "tell me something I didn't know"? Did his statements help in any way shape or form? I'd say no.

There are so many DS's like Bruyneel but they are just left to get on with it.

The reaction to Bruyneel is just a symptom of why cycling struggles to move forward. Everyone concentrates on one thing rather than looking at the bigger picture. Puerto happened and that was all grand, woo the evil cheats are weeded out, but how much did things change?

  • It's astonishing that Bruyneel should try to calim that he didn't know the situation with regards Basso. However, the most interesting part of that interview is the following:

"The new Astana team is "not a copy of Discovery Channel," said the new General Manager of the squad, Johan Bruyneel. "The general situation of the sport does not allow this."

Now whatever could that mean.
