Fitting Mudguards
I have just bought some mudguards. I'm not sure of the brand (threw packet away) but they are bog std full length 700c chromoplastic.
I am intending to fit them to a hybrid fitted with cantilever brakes. The mudguards did not come with any bolt to go through the brake fittings on the fork crown or at the bridge on the seat stay. I guess you would normally just put them on the back of the brake bolt if you had caliper brakes.
I guess any bolt will do for the back but what kind of bolt do you use to fit the front one to the fork crown? Can I just zip tie them both or is that asking for endless rattles?
Thanks!

I take it there's a hole through the fork crown and there's not already something mounted there? My hybrid came with a front reflector so I just used the bolt from that when I fitted guards.
Either way, if it's just to hold your guard on, pretty much anything long enough that's about the right size for the hole should do it. If you can't find a bolt you could try zip ties, they may rattle or may not - so long as it's not going to suddenly fall and jam your wheel it's a pretty non-critical job, just use whatever works!Even if the voices aren't real, they have some very good ideas.0 -
Thank you very much. Reflectors are a good idea - I must have some somewhere.0

My rear mudguard is held to the seat stay bridge with zip ties - works just fine with no rattling - you just have to do them up tight enough.0

If using zip ties, a good tip is to cut up some old inner tube and tape a suitably sized piece in the place where the guard will contact the frame/fork. This will give a rattle free fitting and protect the paint from scratches. However, if you have a hole in the fork crown it's better to use a bolt and nylock nut.0
