brake blocks for v brakes

recently replaced my 1988 rockhopper (yup, rode it for almost 20yrs!) with a 07 rockhopper. The new bike has v-brakes, but the standard blocks seem rubbish, yes they stop but if its wet they turn my pretty silver rims black very quickly, they seem to virtually melt away in the wet, the black rubber waste coating the rims and washing down the tyres as it rains and splashing all over the bike, awful blocks. Anyone got any recommendations for replacements that dont dissolve leaving such a mess and minimise squealing too.... thanks in advance
