Repairing splits in tyres

With it being winter etc, i keep getting splits in my tyres. Some go all the way through to the tube, luckily I've managed to escape the p*ncture fairy.

Anyway, I've repaired some of these with a piece of old tyre cut into a small piece and glued inside the tyre behind the split. It seems a good repair. (Got about 3 tyres with internal fixings)

Is it a safe thing to do?

I'd just like to get other people's opinions. I know you can't put a value on your safety, but the cost of these tyres aren't cheap when you keep buying replacements every couple of weeks.

I'd say OK to get you home.
Given that even in winter I'm up over 30mph on a lot of down hills and up to 50 in summer I want to be sure about my tyres.

  • Hi there.

It depends on what sort of pressure you run. In my experience, split and repaired tyres won't withstand 100psi - they'll only just split again.

My advice would be to invest in some cheaper, heavier, harding wearing tyres for using over the next 3 months or so, and fit your best tyres then.

    Cheers, Andy

I'd ditch the tyre - why do you keep getting them ? Just because its winter ? I'm confoooosed ?

    Try a different make.

Keep them for the turbo (if you've got one)?

I bought a Conti Ultra Sport tyre when I initially bought the turbo but now I've got quite a collection of cut up Spesh Mondos and Conti 4000s that when the designated turbo tyre is worn out (which looks like being quite a while) I'm tempted just to use those.

They're Bontrager Select road tyres. I guess I'm just unlucky, but the splits are being cause by small flint-like stones.

I was told that you get more little stones in the tyres during wet winter weather.

I guess I'll try a different brand..........and chuck those old death traps.

Bontrager Select are pretty c**p imo For £10 you could get the Bontrager Hardcase from All-Terrain Cycles which is a favourite on this site or upgrade to tyres that people on this site rate for winter such as Michelin Krylions (if available), Schwalbe Blizzard or my favourite the Vittoria Open Pave (I wouldn't use this one to commute on - too good/expensive).
