After some help please!!
time i had a new helmet and have a Maximum of £45, whats your advice on helmet choice?? are the more vents better or do they really not make that much difference?? how much difference is the weight goig to make?? a lot seem to be on or close to 300g, yet some are middle 200's?/ is that going to make a lot of difference?? only looking at around an hour a ride?? whats the real difference between a road or mtb helmet??

have been looking at the website's etc. but have got my self tied up in knots about whats what!

may be a bit analish but i do quite like to have a visor on my helmet! if that makes any difference!

Thanks in advance!

One that fits is a good start. Go to a good bike shop and try as many as you can.

TBH I dont think the weigh of you helmet is going to make any difference at all (ie negligible) so as HC said, fit should be the main factor when buying a helmet as everyone has different shaped heads, buy what's comfy. Persoanlly spesh helmets just don't fit me, however Giro helmets all fit snugly
  • thats a good point! i shall wonder up to Bikechain and see what they have!!

thanks guys! after all the surfing and looking at helmets i hadnt thought about trying them all on!!! (looks for a Doofus smily!!!)

I think the difference with helmets is minimal. Just find one that fits well. I had a Giro E2 (£60 or something) but didn't get on with it and went back to wearing a Bell helmet that cost £13! A few grams here or there isn't really going to make a lot of difference. I usually forget I'm wearing it straight after putting it on anyway.

Hello mate check out this link. I got a giro hex for Xmas and at this price you can't fault it. See if you can try one on first.

  • It's all down to personal choice, i use a 661 pisspot, keeps you cool with number of vents in summer, but stay warm in winter with beany underneath! Used to feel a prat with a lid on, but after a "near miss" always where one now!

As above fitting is essential. All helmets must meet a minimum safety requirement for intended use, so more expensive ones are not necessarily safer. However they are usually better made, with superior venting and retention systems.

Best I have found, and which I use for under 50 quid is the BELL Slant.
  • If your wife's Havoc is a good fit, why don't you buy one of those? At least that way you know if you buy one mail order it's going to be snug. They're On sale in Chain Reaction Cycles for £35 but if you want to spend the £45, a Giro Hex. Same brand but better styling and venting. And as it's the same brand the fit should be more or less the same. I use a Giro E2 and the fit is so comfy...........

Bell Sweep XC 2005 for half price £45.
  • the only trouble with the sweep is that you need t have a small head for that price! ;)

Me and wife have had Giros in that price range for years.
Very adjustable, pretty light, very good and don't look too "mushroomy"
