I've just received my groupset and on the chorus chain it says you MUST use their tool.

Do I really need to use that tool? What do other people use?

KMC or Connex chains - at over £50 a pop the Campag chain tool is extortionate.

i'm sure i've read you don't need their tool, though i'd use the chain till it needs changing then get a SRAM one which you can take off wth your fingers :)

Classic Campag. Sad thing is, people just buy that shit, and don't complain.

I use the SRAM quick-link on both Shimano and Campy chains.....no problems with either
(Not to criticize, but have you ever seen Campy's Manual for Chain Moidifications  ????? the 2009 Chain will probably have to be sent to Italy for corrections  )

Oh poo - I've just bought a replacement Veloce chain.
Are the SRAM chains much better? Where's the best source?
So what's the procedure for fitting a Campag. chain?
Guess I better ditch the chain tool for the broom-wagon 'phone!
  • a mate bought the campag chain tool , then emigrated giving it to me, so i use it. but it's overkill. i've used a cheapish park one with no problems.
i take a basic chain/multitool and sram powerlinks out on the bike as the campag tool is so big it's workshop only.
having said that it's very well made a pleasure to use but should be at the price he paid.!

I've used the Connex link on the ultra-narrow Campag chains for a couple of years now - works fine for me (needs the 'Shimano' 6.0 mm version for this chain). Fit with the lump on the outside of the chain so the lump does not contact sprockets. No expensive Campag tool - just remove the unwanted few links with any chain tool. I like the easy removal for cleaning with this link.

Have used most brands of 9 & 10 speed chain (except Shimano) on 9 & 10 speed Campag (9 speed chain seems to work fine on 10 speed casette), without any problems whatsoever, except Connex stainless which got stiff links and jumped in the wet. Tend to use joining links rather than following Campag instructions (though I have the tool, which although it is expensive, works fine on other brands and will probably last forever. Despite reservations about their chain, I prefer Wipperman Connex joining link as it's simple to use and lasts forever. Shimano version of this works fine on Sram chain, but contrary to earlier post is too tight for Campag chain.
  • The connex link cost about £6. - well worth it in my opinion.

Changing a chain takes only a minuate

The first 10 speed I changed broke when sprinting - (How do you get bruises down both sides in one crash?)

    You have been warned
Racing is rubbish you can\'t relax and enjoy it- because some bugger is always trying to get past.

The reason they say that is because their pin is smaller dia than shimano so most chain tools will actually damage the chain. Parker's doa compatible one and just like campy the pin is replaceable which is good in case it breaks - that;s what I use and have had no problems.
