I've got about £1400 to spend and am looking to upgade to a full sus bike. My friend who works in a bike shop has recommended a number of options which are as follows:
08 commencal meta 5.3- tested this (large frame) found it quite unsettled over jumps with compression spikes, maybe i need the medium?
08 trek ex 7
08 specialized pitch
The main riding i do is a mix of cross country and single track.... llandegla black run, penmachno and keilder, some which is quite technical with jumps etc so i need something that will take the hits and steer well but is not as heavy as a freerife rig.
Any suggestions?

Of those, I'd go for the Trek.
If you could go another £300, this is supposed to be a great bike http://www.marin.co.uk/2008/bikedetail.php?ModNo=3821"Internet Forums - an amazing world where outright falsehoods become cyber-facts with a few witty key taps and a carefully placed emoticon."0 -

We have a Specialized Pitch Pro demo bike at our shop, unfortunately in a medium so too small for me, but the guys that have ridden it have said that it is amazing and far better than the '08 Stumpjumper. They tested it at Afan Argoed and Cwmcarn and set that on the descents it was very nimble, chuckable and even kept up with one of the other guys on a Commencal Furious!!0
