Recommend me a frame pump...

Having heard various stories about mini pumps and needing biceps like Arnie to use them I'm going to opt for a frame pump.

My only concern is my seatstay has a bottle cage ( I'd like to keep ) so that leaves my toptube, however I don't have much space between the top tube and down tube ( see image ) for the pump to fit.. Will a frame pump fit ? If so what do people recommend, I'm liking the look of the Blackburn carbon...

The likes of the Topeak and the Blackburn pumps have soft rubber ends that will probably seat quite neatly against your carbon frame without damaging the paintwork - the Zefal HP-x is good, but the hard plastic and metal ends isn't paintwork friendly. Suggest you find a LBS that stocks either and try to see how they fit as length is critical - you may need to use the velcro stap to hold the handle in place too.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Topeak road morph is the one I have. Works like a floor pump only it fits on the frame.
Not the lightest thing on earth but will get you back up to high pressure a lot easier
than the normal mini or frame pump. It's not perfect but I rate it highly. Easy to use, not overly expensive, and mounts just about anywhere.

  • A good compromise is the innovations http://www.byercycles.co.uk/21.htm It fits next to to bottle cage and pumps up to a reasonable pressure

Totally off topic here Mog, but your bars look like they have a huge dent in them!

You can get a nib-device that attaches to the top-tube for holding a frame pump.

Would that be like the old `trimmed off zip tie used as a pump peg' thing?

Have you thought about carrying a CO2 inflation system instead? Something like this:

Mog, just taken delivery of Blackburn Frame pump from Wiggle (not the CF one) very pleased with it - will made works a treat and fits the frame very well. The package gives a measure scale to ensure you get the corrcet size. :D

I do carry C02 but can only carry so many spare cylinders. On long rides/Sportives, I like the piece of mind of having a pump. Call me paranoid.

Was at my local Evans today and picked up a Specialized Air Tool, it's almost frame size yet has a bottle cage clamp so is out of the way. I had a quick test and got 100psi with not much effort at all. Lovely Jubbly

lol, it does look like that doesn't it. It's not a dent, the bars have indents for your thumbs and fingers, superbly comfy it has to be said..

You did send me a link to the makers some time ago - but I can't remember who it is - am american firm I think?

What happens with Campag owners? is there space in the bars to clip the gear cables on? how are the brake cables routed without tape on the tops?
