I need to take my laptop to work tomorrow. I will be going to another branch, so it will be about 50 minutes on the road in the forecasted subzero temperature. Will it survive the ordeal??? :? I will be carrying it in my rucksack as I do not have a pannier.

    shouldnt be a problem

    keep it dry

sit it on a desk a while before booting it up

the cold only causes it a problem when its running

    that will be all

  • And whatever you do, don't let your laptop get between you and the ground if you happen to go down on the bike.

I am into my second winter of commuting through sub-zero temperatures with my laptop--I actually just carry it in a laptop bag slung over one shoulder. I used to strap the bag down to my rack but got a bit worried about what the shock and vibration could do to components like the hard drive. No reliability problems so far (and no crashes while riding with the laptop).

As long as you let the laptop warm up to something close to room temperature before booting it up, it should be fine.

Watch for condensation. The solution is to wrap in an airtight bag before you leave, condensation can kill laptops over time.

The solution we also used to use for laptops on board ship was to spay the inside of the machine with hairlaquer, which forms a barrier over all the joins

And maybe wrap it in a (extremely dry) towel? Thats what I do with my lap top when I take it long distances, in my rucksack. For padding and the moisture protection. It seems to work so far!
