9 speed chainset - 8 speed cassette
I've currently got 8-speed 2200 STI shifters and an 8 speed HG40 cassette on my roadie (with a 7/8 speed chain). I'm going to get a 9-speed Tiagra Hollowtech II 4550 50/34 compact chainset soon - question is, will the 9-speed chainset work with the existing 8-speed setup - the chainset seems to require a narrow 9-speed chain - do these narrow 9-speed chains work with 8 speed cassettes? - my particular cassette is the Shimano HG40 8 speed cassette.
Thanks
Thanks

yes the c/set will work
and yes, a 9spd chain will work with a 8spd cassetteFacts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -
Thanks Maddog - given that the Hollowtech II chainset has an integrated bottom bracket does it require anything else to fit it - some adverts seem to just mention the chainset whilst other adverts mention needing BB "cups" in addition to the chainset?0

For Hollowtech, you'll need the bb cups, and if you don't have one, a tool to fit them. Hollowtech cranks have a built in axle, so dont work with standard bb's.
I've been running dura ace 10 sp chainset succesfully with an old ultegra 8sp setup (using 8sp chain).0 -
Thanks s_r - does anyone know if this is the correct tool to fit the BB cups:
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.a ... ket%20Tool
"Bottom bracket wrench for use with Shimano hollowtech II and Truvativ GXP bottom brackets"
It mentions being compatible with Hollowtech II - just double-checking before purchase - does the job require any other tools in addition to this?0 -
thats the bit and no you don't need any other tools - the hollowtech2 stuff is incredibly easy to fit.0

Thanks mate - although it's often mentioned to get the shell faced in advance, is it worth atleast trying to see if the cups screw in "satisfactorily" first ?? - my Road bike's only 3 months old - I'm guessing the shell should be in reasonable shape still.
Also, to confirm what my existing bottom bracket type is do I just have to unscrew the non-drive-side crank and have a look? - then get the correct tool to remove it?0
