Clamping on a workstand

Is clamping the bike by the seat post when off the ground on the workstand the best place to hold it, does it put too much pressure on the area around the seatpost clamp, is clamping on the frame a better idea?

Thanks Matt.

  • Never clamp too tight on a carbon frame though
  • I think you will find, most manafactures recommend you do not clamp their tubes in a workstand, I always use the seatpost only.

Only a problem if you're a numpty like me, clamped the bike by the seat post, removed front wheel, centre of gravity shifted and bike and stand fell over  . You have been warned.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

    always the seatpost

the only bike I would clamp in the frame (often because the seat post is too short) is my BMX which is made from thick cromoly tubing which will almost withstand a nuclear strike

Most decent workstands let you adjust the clamp so your gripping the seatpost just enough to hold the bike steady to work on.

You can clamp the top tube if you want particularly if you're one of these people who have about 1cm of seatpost visible.

Otherwise the seatpost is the best place to clamp when your bike is on a workstand.

The seat post is really the only place I can clamp mine, as the gear cables run across the top tube on my bike.
