Seized Shimano QR skewer in Hope XC hub

Hi, anyone know how to free a Shimano QR skewer from a rear Hope hub? I noticed the QR lever was a little loose - the non QR side tightens ok but the lever side seems to have too big a gap and so does not grip ver well when closed. Furthermore the skewer seems to be stuck ie it does not come out easily from the hub when the non-lever side nut is removed.

Am thinking block of wood and mallet but would appreciate advice before resorting to brute force and ignorance!

loads of wd40 leave over night and then a few gentle taps with a wooden block.
