Polish for all frames - what kind?

I am looking for a decent frame polish which shines and protects your frame, be that carbon, steel or aluminum. (I realise that a fi frame would need different treatment).

Would a silicone polish be good for such a purpose? Any recommendations?

I use WD40, on my bikes alu and Carbon, it,s used by many Dutch cycling mechanics. Just spray it on and buff it up with a clean cloth, works fine. Greetings Ademort. and a happy new year.

Silicon not WD40. WD 40 is the worst substance for any part of a bike. It's a solvent, nothing more, and much less in most applications.

I would never use WD 40 on any part of my bike, ever.

I'm sure, it's also good at breaking down hard oils and greases as well. Good for you.
  • Just done a search and came across this stuff. Anyone had any experiences of this on a CF or Alu frame? Would it be safe to use?

What I didn't say was that i have been using a silicone polish which is 'Pedros Bike Lust', and was wondering if I can apply this to different frame materials you see. Great on aluminium but not sure if i could use it on my carbon frame.

Bikers 46 Have personally mailed WD40 at there office in Germany as regards using WD40 on my Carbon frame and i was assured that it will not damage in anyway my frame it is perfectly safe to use.I know that when a bike is brought into my LBS for a service the frame and forks always buffed up with WD40 by the mechanic as part of the service. It,s all in the price. That stuff should be fine on a carbon frame - it leaves a really nice acrylic finish that fills in some of the little micro scratches you get from washing and leaves the surface really 'wet' looking. very nice indeed on a car or motorbike panel and I am sure it will be fine on a carbon frame.

I'd also look at some of the 'pure' natural waxes - not cleaner waxes (there is a big difference) such as something like P21S - a car wax with very little thinner content as it is basically a big block of natural carnuaba wax in a tub. It's very easy to use, leaves a great long lasting water repellent finish and will be safe as houses on carbon.
  • I use good old Mr Sheen, can't beat it for simple fuss free polish

Lubes are a different matter, but Mr Sheen works for me just for shining up the frame and components, before lubing up

Just remember that all a polish does is to give your frame a nice shine. Don't believe all this rubbish about "protection", there is absolutely none.

What about a decent quality car polish and wax? Good enough on metal, GRP, kevlar and carbon, so should be okay on a bike...

I said nothing about the frame. You don't lube a bike frame. You lube metal bearings. WD 40 breaks down that lube.

Personally, I don't care, I was just lending advise I obtained through a personal experience.

WD 40 is a solvent and destroys lubrication substances. Simple math. Use whatever makes your bike pretty. I use what is practical.

wd40 makes the frame shinny but then attracts the dirt Mr Sheen ,a car polish ,or my preference Pedros bike lust polish are much better

Yeah I just nick the Mr Sheen - works for me. And the frame only stays clean whilst its in the garage, so I wouldnt waste a huge amount of time shining it. Maybe if the bike is going away for a bit - then it makes sense.
