Me and a mate are off here at the end of Jan. Anything we need to know? Anything we should take?

Have been on web site and could not get much in the way of info?

Is it worth while or any other XC rides that stand out in the B.Ham area?

  • This post http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12553518&highlight= might be of use. There is a main XC course around Cannock Chase thats very forest oriented - lots of purpose built trails through forests with smallish hills. However, if you can widen your field, try Shropshire - Ludlow, Hopwood and Long Mynd have great trails - I prefer the later for XC. All are only about 45 minutes - 1 hour from Brum.

Cannock has easier to follow signs though, so need for a map if following the actual courses (http://www.chasetrails.co.uk/).
  • Thank you. I like the sound of the other rides (shropshire etc) any specific rides worth doing???
  • I can't suggest any particulars at Hopwood and Ludlow but I love the Long Mynd classic - http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/routes/whatmtb/longmynd.html though its double the length of Cannock's Follow the Dog course. Be warned though, the Mynd is a large flat plateaux that can be difficult to navigate if the weather is poor. The bridleways used in the above link are signed, but not great, so an OS map (and possibly a compass) would be useful!! Oh and the ability to read it! You can also shorten this by turning right around point 7 and heading towards and down the bridleway through Carding Mill Valley. Do take the bridleway and not the footpath, cuz that aint ridable, especially the waterfall bit.

Might try this one tomorrow http://www.moredirt.co.uk/trail_info.php?id=198, will report back if I do and its worth it.

it\'s only unethical if you get caught.....
  • cannock chase is a bike breaker. It wore my brake pads write down to bare metal and the sandy soil got everywhere on the bike. good fun though but a bugger to clean your bike once the fun is over.

definately worth a trip, im still dying to get back up there. i did llandegla the other weekend and as good as it was, i had just as much fun at cannock but without ending up as knackered as llandegla left me!!
  • The official trail at cannock is great, but short, you will do one loop in 1-2 hrs depending on fitness.

there are hundreds of unofficial singletracks though, just need to explore.
