Cutting Disk Brake Hoses

Hi, Just fitted Deore LX Disk brakes to my bike.
Fitted everything fine, but the brake cable is way too long. I have unscrewed the black bolt that is at the lever end and slid it down the cable. I assumed the cable would then pull out of the lever (along with a load of oil) but it didnt

Can anyone tell me how I remove that cable, so I can cut it shorter and then re-attach to the lever. It may just be stiff, but I dont want to risk breaking it, by tugging at the cable.

Cheers
Paul

have a read of the shimano instructions that should have come with your brakes. or read the info on parktools or shimanos own webby.
"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
    Parktools :?:SheldonBrown
  • Thanks, will have a look on Parktools, but have done the Shimano site to death, and believe it or not I have looked at the instructions, no mention whatsoever of cable cutting. :)

Don't cut - pull. Check whcih one you have first cause I think there are two types of attachment but the one on my XT brakes it was just a case of pulling quite firmly (once the bolt was undone of course) - to the point where I was concerned about damaging the lever.

The brake pipe should just pull out.

In the brake kit should be 2 small yellow plastic bits (TL BH61 part No) these fit over the brake tube and clamp it hard so you can hold with pliers. You should also have a spare olive and insert, the clamps are needed for pushing the insert down the inside of the brake tube when you have cut to length.

To expand on the above -this is for refitting the hose once cut. My brakes came with a new olive and insert but not the yellow clamps describes - I managed to hold them with a vice grip (mole grip) and it worked ok.
