Garmin Edge 305 and mapping software
I have a Garmin Edge 305 which I both use as a training tool and for navigation. I plot routes with mapmyride and then upload it to the Garmin. I find it quite sufficient to find my way but the problem is with Google maps which mapmyride and similar free sites use. It is often impossible to distinguish small roads from rough tracks which I want to avoid on my road bike. Therefore I have been looking at proper mapping software. Mapyx Quo range has caught my eye as they currently have the whole of GB in OS 1:50000 on offer for under £100. unfortunately they don't support the .crs format required by the Edge. Has anyone found a way around it and what about others such as MemoryMap and Anquetil? Just if anyone suggests I don't want to check the route on Quo and then use mapmyride to plot it if I can avoid it. Tanks for your help.

As always...
This is NOT a navigation tool, it is a fitness monitor with limited GPS facility.
It is incompatible with most maping software as it does not have "routes and tracks", but history and Course files.
Exporting a route form Memory-Map to the 305 is fine, and I suspect that this will be the same for most.but there is no option but to download the ride detail through a third party and saving as a Memory Map acceptable file.
However if you are buying new - check with the company. MMv5 does support the .crs and *.hst files, but they have no plans to add these as an upgrade to previous versions!
I am not going to replace the Memory Map Software and maps at £200 +
There is a free converter as well which works with the ""Motion based software -

Simply use this as a mediator between the two software sets.

I've had no trouble navigating 80+mile routes with the 305. Ok, so it is pretty basic i.e. follow the black line, or the compass, but what else do you need? I've always used memory map to create the route and then download to the 305, again without problem.
There is a shareware converter tool on http://www.gpsbabel.org/ which MAY be able to convert routes to .crs files, but I haven't used it. Maybe someone else knows more on it's functionality?0 -
Thanks guys. Good to hear that MemoryMap supports .crs format which is an option now although an expensive one.
Quite agree with APIII I have found navigating with my Edge no problem as long as I plotted the correct track which has been the only problem so far.
Since my initial post I did some more searches on google and found this very interesting website: http://www.gpsies.com/home.do. It converts all sorts of files including the standard .gpx which will allow me to use Quo. You can also plot your tracks on it and is impressively fast.
Has anyone of you used the Mapyx Quo mapping software? It seems a steal compared with MemoryMap and the like. Just wonder if there is any functionality catch to it?0 -
I use Tracklogs and have been very please with it. You can buy a 1:50k region for £20.
