So what's it to be, current short list comprises Specialized Hard Rock Sport, Claud Butler Rock XC,Carrera Kraken (down to £265),GT Avalanche ?
I am leaning towards the Specialized, mainly because of the brand quality, but it is the lowest of the low as far as their range is concerned. Should I swallow my pride and go the Halfords route ? I won't be doing any fullonoff-roading.
Thanks!

Spec wise the carrera kraken is the best with 27 speed gearing and cable disc brakes (and £265 is very good value), but it really depends on how good your local halfords is as to what after care you get.

I ride a GT Avalanche and they actually are a very good bike, and they look good too. The brakes on my are excellent, the gears often need a bit of fine tunining, but I guess it depends on how you ride.

Have a look at the Mongoose Tyax Elite, very good value + a damped fork (an off road essential, unless you like pogo sticks) which is rare on £300 bikes
