Upgrading a Barracuda Thriller

My wife has just bought herself a Barracuda Thriller. It isn't the best bike in the world I have to say. Can anyone recommend any upgrades I can do to this bike to improve things.

I have just fitted shimano deore hydraulic brakes as previous one were cr*p.

She would like to use for a mixture of both commuting and XC. As it stands I don't think it is upto much XC.

    To be totally honest get a new bike.
    Cheaper full sussers are pretty dire for commuting/xc as they weigh as much as a small tank, personally I think a hardtail would be much better suited for the job, I wouldn't bother upgrading it.
