Nasty piece of journalism

Another piece of vindictive comment against cyclists from the UK press - this time from The Times columnist Matthew Parris. He must have been wound up in the boozer on Christmas Eve!

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/commen ... 097464.ece

He is obviously a past master on this type of writing, a book "Scorn : a bucketful of discourtesy, disparagement, invective, ridicule, impudence, contumely, derision, hate, affront, disdain, bile, taunts, curses and jibes he edited was published in October 1994".
The more you spend - the faster you go - the less you see.

He surely must be mentally ill.

His article may be ( and to me is) distasteful, but you win no friends by stooping to such insults yourself.

How he can't tell the difference between a White Van Man and a cyclist is a mystery to me.

    What a sad misjudgement.

So very true my learned friend, he should have just called the obnoxious little puffter a tw@. No reason at all to call him mentally ill ,which, according to your barmy logic, is an insult too far.
Presumedly in your book being mentally ill is a greater crime than being a complete and utter tw@..

You like ther OP are doing cyclists no favours with your tasteless insults.

We should be taking the high ground over articles like this, not stooping to the same level as Parris.

We will loose much sympathy from the public at large if they see cyclists complaining re his vile article by posting similarily bile material.

Spen is completely right. Parris's piece was completely over the top and we don't want to give him the opportunity of defending it by quoting some of the posts here.

I have deleted my posts on the subject of Parris.
They are still there though as my comments have been included in replies.
Spen and P.Stevens need to delete these to dissarm Parris.
    Apparently.
  • I have posted elsewhere that Parris should be offered the chance to be taken out for a ride with normal cyclists, and see what really happens.

Paggers, no need to be bashful!

You ever going to drop this nonsense?
    You are such a bore.
  • An Apology from Matthew!

"I offended many with my Christmas attack on cyclists. It was meant humorously but so many cyclists have taken it seriously that I plainly misjudged. I am sorry."

OK, I'll be gracious enough to accept that. It's not often you get such a thing these days.

Shame his editor didn't have the courtesy to reply, though.

Problem is some people (like me) and some like in the article from Oz, above, don't see this as a joke. It is a totally reckeless suggestion even if he claims it is intended in humour. I don't suppose the parents of that child would be prepared to see the funny side!
