Biospace Chainset.

I've just bought an older type style steel road bike with a shimano 105 bio-space chainset(52-42) and a 6 speed cassette (28-14). Could any of your learned readers advise me on whether I can change the chainrings to the ordinary round ones. The 52-42 will probably be a little too hard for me on the hills so does anyone know what the smallest chainring I could use keeping the same cassette and without changing the rear mech. Any other cheap options would be greatly appreciated. Many Thanks. IAN.

Yes you can fit a normal (130 BCD) Shimano chainset - the smallest is 38 teeth. Look at Spa Cycles website for cheap Stronglight rings.

Best bet is the stronglight Dural chain rings - ribble do them cheap or slightly more for the zircal 7075 ones.0

I have a dim memory that moving the position of the biopace rings clockwise by one bolt negated the effect.0
