stopping a fixed wheel

Just picked up my new fixed wheel bike. Before hitting the road I was wondering if there were any tips for stopping at traffic lights etc. Touch wood I've had never had problems unclipping with my other bikes but having riden it up the street in my trainers it seems to be pretty tricky. Am I being rightly nervous or is it simple?
