Tropical weather shoes and clipless pedals

I am thinking of finally taking the plunge and going clipless.
But I am extremely worried over the outcome (slight exaggeration!)
I currently run the Xpedo MX3 platforms which I find comfortable, fantastically lightweight for platforms but just a little too large.
So I have been looking at the Crank brothers Candy and Acid pedals because they offer a lightweight system but with a slight platform when not wearing bike shoes. Any opinions on these pedals?
I am of course going to need shoes but hate the look of classic cyle shoes, so my option seem to be skate style shoes which I prefer the look but they are way too hot for me so I found to options; either Shimano MT40 or Adidas Cyclone shoes. Are there any other 'cycle shoes of reasonable design for use in hot weather climate" options out there?
Or any other ideas for clipless pedals with shoes for tropical climates for someone who is use to platforms?!?!?!
Ta!
