Was reading CW in WH Smiths yesterday, they were testing winter gear (CW not Smiths!!)

They had a Gill Pro jacket which looks the part, considering one myself, wondered if anyone else has one?

  • I'm using an Endura Venturi eVENT jacket, so far it's been totally waterproof and does an excellent job of letting the sweat out! It seems pretty tough and well made too. If there's any niggle with it, the zip is a little hard to work with one gloved hand - other than that, can't fault it.

I have one! Top piece of kit - I can't fault it.
No pockets though, so if you need 'em look elsewhere.

I had an Altura Reflex jacket last year - very breathable and light, unfortunately it started letting water in after about 6 months, Wiggle refunded without quibble (they were out of stock at the time). I would like to try again, it was lighter than my PacLite and about as breathable.

    gore phantom

only showerproof but properly breathable. Can be worn all year round, with/without a base layer.

  • I tried on the Gill Pro in the LBS and an Endura event. I went for the event for two reasons.

1 - The Gill has no pockets.
2 - The zip of the Gill looked like it would break easily. It is a waterproof zip with tiny teeth. I find these break. The bit you pull to open/close was made with metal so thin it looked like wire. After a few winters I expect the metal would break and it would be impossible to pull the zip open or closed.

The Endura is not without problems. As someone else pointed out the zip. Its not waterproof but does have nice big teeth. To prevent water getting in there is a storm flap to cover it and a 'gutter' at the top. The zip tends to get stuck on the 'gutter' near the neck. The zips on the pockets are a work of art.
