now, i dont quite know why but i really, really want a banshee x. Has anyone got one and if so, what are your thoughts?

Also, what are peoples thoughts on the idea of getting one to upgrade in the future? i know that the bearings are all standard sizes so the frame should be future proof but would it be a case of trying to make a silk purse out of a pigs ear?

my plans would include changing the fork for a pike, wheels for a set of hope hoops and the shock for something like a fox float.

i reckon this would stretch to about 600 quid (using some tactical eBay purchasing) and i reckon the bike would be about 400 (with some more ebaying) but even at its brandnew price of 600 for the bike, a total build of 1200 quid would mean i had a pretty well specced bit of kit for around a grand. (the upgrades would be done over a period of a few months).

seems like a good deal to me but would i just end up with good kit hanging off a turd?

you'd be better off paying £1200 for a previous years decent trek, kona, giant etc. You can save huge amounts because people want the latest frame colour or fork model. Job done no need to spend time and money upgrading.

The bike wouldn't be a complete piece of junk, but the improvements are limited by the frame.

I had a similar thing for a saracen n-zyme. It's now a single speed with xt/717/ralphs/fizik/hope headset/carbon fork and bars. Nice and light, but should I have spent the money on a better bike? probably.

Unless you get a bike on credit from Wiggle or CRC.

I have heard that the Banshee is quite a heavy bike.

For the money, the banshee X is best in its class. Limited a little by its price, but still, very few bikes have this level of kit and travel (and strength) - if thats what you want. Frame based on the old Stinky, but with a Horst link, and new model has improved bearings.
