Shimano 7 speed XT freehub body overhaul
I have the above on my 15+ year old commuter. The ratchet mechanism has gone and I can't get hold of a replacement. My LBS is sorting me out with a replacement using shims and spacers to make a new freehub body to fit but I would like to make the original work as I hate throwing anything out that can be repaired.
Has anyone disassembled a freehub body and are the spares still available? Sheldon Brown is quite good on this but a bit vague on the inspection of parts and the putting back together again.
Cheers.
Carl.
Ps the freehub looks very similar to this 6 speed version (with a slightly shorter thread and different cassette side dust cap:

I'm surprised - I run some early 90s Shimano hubs and even the modern 7 speed bits (admittedly lowly STX and stuff) is still available and fits.
However you have to look a bit (Ebay and SJS Cycles are a good starting point) although I think that either Chain Reaction or Wiggle still stock 7s freehub bodies."It must be true, I saw it on the Internet!"0 -
Thanks for the replies guys. The 7 speed freehub bodies are available but for the newer systems which are slightly different than my old freehub body. Differences being in the lugs on the outer next to the wheel and number of threads on the outer next to the dropout. Also different ends caps etc. I think I will get the one from my LBS but also have a go at fixing the one I have.0
