Claud Butler Olympus Pro

I need to replace my worn out Giant Boulder. Had 2 sets of forks, 2 pairs of wheels, 2 chainsets and 2 Rear Mechs. The second set of rims are now worn out again (a lot of muddy riding)
I've seen a Claud Butler Olympus Pro for £450 with LX dual control hydraulic discs, Rockshox Pilot SL forks. Looks a good bike for the spec. Anyone had one and what did they think?
I'm thinking that I can use the components on a better frame in the near future but need something quick to get out and about again?
thanks

You could do a lot better for £450 without the need to swap to a 'better frame' later on.
The forks are pretty rubbish really - consider a frame with say a Deore drivetrain but better fork (Tora etc) - that's my line of thinking anyhow0 -
Yeah the Pilot fork is defunct and been replaced by the Tora - if I remember rightly, it was hardly a stellar fork when it was out...
For another £50 you could get a GT Avalanche 1.0 which Bike Radar says is one of the best bikes fo rthe money they've ever seen! http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.a ... isc%2020080 -
or even a kona blast
which I and some reviewers think is a little bit better than the avalanche (having ridden both Id go Kona..I never touched it! It was broke when I got here.0 -
The 08 blast is pretty poorly specced - basic fork, 8spd and mechanical discs when others are packing in better forks, 9spd and hydros for less money.
The Pilot SL is an XC fork, flexy and not very good.0 -
thanks guys,
The forks were worrying me as it's an 05 bike and I thought things would have advanced quite a lot by now.
The GT is nice, but I was put off by it having suntour forks on it, but again they are much better than they used to be.
The other one I was looking at was the 2008 Cube Acid Disc from CRC, £80 more but looks good and previous models have had good reviews.
This looks good http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=14966 but not seen any reviews other than a couple of dutch sites.
Probably end up getting a Rockhopper0 -
I had reservations about suntour forks based on previous offerings but I've not heard a bad word (relative to price of the bike they come on) about them. Clearly they're no Rebas or Fox Floats but they're a total different ball park.
If the GTs not your cuppa, look at what Cheesy said, RS Toras and Deore throughout on a decent frame should be within your budget.
Evans have got 2007 Spesh Rockhoppers for £450 - lovely frame which wouldn't be out of place as a £1000 bike - you'll have to live with v-brakes for now but it's all disc ready, even the hubs. You get a Tora fork but unfortunately not a 318 or Air variant but it'll be better than the Psylo on the Claud Butler.0 -
I do like the idea of the Rockhopper as it'd be a good starting point for more serious riding, and hopefully more reliable aswell!0

The Rockhopper is a good suggestion.
At this price and especially if you are looking for upgrade potential, also have a look around at deals on Giant XTC 4.5s or even 3.5s.Try www.paulscycles.co.uk or www.ashcycles.co.uk
