    Sure you could pick up a Spesh Allez or Trek 1000 for that kind of money. Both are common on the second hand market. Just got to keep scouring the ads. Probably need a 54 or 55cm but best to have a ride on it first.

    love Bianchi though..Via nerone at evans on sale at £450....just a little iver my budget with xmas and such

    Don't forget to factor in pedals and shoes, jersey, helmet, shorts, mitts, pump and a puncture repair kit. You may not need them all straight away but shorts and shoes are fairly essential...and some would say a helmet too.

    Course, if you buy brand new you have the chance to wander around the shop, take several bikes out for a spin and decide from there. Its handy to go second hand shopping armed with a bit of knowledge. Saying that....I bought mine blind and it turned out ok!

    Stif in Headingley have a 2006 (I think) Trek 1000 in a 58cm that has been in the shop for ages.. they offered me a sizable discount when i was in there.a few weeks ago..which took it down to £400.

    Nice bike, would have got it myself.
