Reducer headsets

I am soon to be in receipt of my (rather splendid) Mythic Wildcard which has a 1.5 headtube.
the forks I have had a result on are a 1 1/8 steerer so need a reducer headset.
Seeing that this rig is (in total) going to cost me somewhere in the region of £2.5k I though it stupid to be cheap with the headset so I looked on Aspire Velotechs site (which I use frequently) for the CK Devolution.......
Looks great - usual machining excellence. However.... what's all this preload gizmo thing about.........
http://www.aspirevelotech.com/Merchant2 ... e=DEVO1218
Looks like a head doctor that Hope (which was another option) supply with there's?
What's the deal with this? I am not even sure that I can access the bottom of the steerer tube (as per my PIKEs - they seem to have a black object blocking the lower part of the steerer) :?
I have not tried to remove said object so not sure if it can be taken out
If that's the case I don't want one of these contraptions tbh.
Any decent alternatives out there - don't really have a budget but want something that has sealed bearings rather than BBs...
Cheers

just use the starnut that is in the forks or get one. all it has to do is preload the bearings. you should still be anle to use the CK top cap."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Thanks Nick - the forks are spanking new and don't have a star nut but I have a spare few!
So the device that comes with the headset is only to preload the bearings, NOT to remain fitted? If so I shall get one.
I would imagine that the headset as usual will come with top cap and star nut washer then.
Great stuff.
Also are all of the FSA Pig headsets unsealed rather than sealed bearings? Even the Pro?
Thanks mate.
EDIT: I can also tell you that the forks are 07 Marz 66 SL 1 ATAs - waiting for them to be delivered (far cheaper than the Totems) if that should make a difference to leaving the gizmo in?0 -
no it is to stay there. all it is ia an alternative to a star nut. eg a head lock.
it just does the job of a star nut weights more and costs more."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

he he - I think this build is going to weight about 35-40lbs as it is so weight isn't an issue. and with the exchange rate on the dollar the headset will cost me about £90 which I can live with.
I don't mid extra expenditure as long as the item is worth it, which in my view CK stuff is
if the LBS can access the bottom of the steerer on the marz I'll just leave it in - I am presuming that the top cap supplied will be an 1 1/8th also :?0 -
if you are looking for a great headset try the Cane Creek Double Xc, about £80-90 and works as a reducer for 1.5" -> 1.125" setups
I would take the Cane Creek over the C.King 1.5 any day as the Cane Creek is proven and spares are easily available from Extra UK - the sealed bearings are only £12 each and if you wish to run a full 1.5" setup in the future then you can buy the 1.5" crown race and 1.5" compression washer to convert your headset
most 1.5" convertor headsets use a regular 1.125" star fangled nut and top cap to compress the headset and it works finecheck out my riding - www.robcole.co.uk Banshee Factory Team rider, Da Kine UK Team rider, www.freeborn.co.uk www.eshershore.com0 -

Sounds good Rob - will give it a whirl!
It's for my Wildcard - awaiting delivery anyday now though Freeborn said it's more likely to be early Jan - but it will be worth the wait!
Team Colours too!!!0
