Time for a new drivetrain??

I've got a 2005 rockhopper. Most of the parts have been upgraded however the drive train has remained untouched other than a new chain every 6-8 months.
When in my work stand the gears shift perfectly. However whilst riding the bike the gears occasionally slip. Is it simply time for a new cassette and chain rings?
If it is time for new chain rings would i be better off upgrading the crankset as the deore one fitted isn't great.

Might simply be the cassette and chain.
I have a 05 Rockhopper, the deore Crank on mine only lasted just over a year and I had the same problem with it slipping when applying force while standing, would invest in a decent Crankset in the Jan sales if you can wait a couple of weeks0 -
Unless they're standard Shimano Saint chainrings which are very soft metal, you're chainrings will probably be ok still unless you do thousands of miles a year.
Chances are, it's a new chain and cassette you need unless your chain is fairly new (then just get a cassette).
I usually change both at the same time because I tend to hammer one gear alot commuting and often find the chain slips if I get a new chain and try to leave the old cassette on.Dave S0 -
You need to work out whether it is slipping round a tooth when it slips or whether it's skipping from one gear to another and back again. The first is a worn drivetrain, the second needs indexing.
If your cassette and chainrings are 2 years old, they're probably due a change anyway.
Cheapest option would be a new set of Deore rings from CRC or the like, with a chain and cassette. However if you decide to upgrade your crank, be warned that LX and above come with Aluminium middle rings and you will need to replace them more often."Internet Forums - an amazing world where outright falsehoods become cyber-facts with a few witty key taps and a carefully placed emoticon."0 -
the gears are indexed, chain slips without changing cogs.0

Aren't the new xt ones better for wear, with the steel/composite rings. The same style as xtr?0

New XT has steel/composite middle ring, XTR has titanium/composite middle. I think they both still have ali granny rings. I have a new XT so I should know really."Internet Forums - an amazing world where outright falsehoods become cyber-facts with a few witty key taps and a carefully placed emoticon."0
