Here goes - Today I get to buy my Pikes! WOOHOO!
I am going for the 454 Air U-Turn 2008 ones, I have found Chain reaction and Wiggle to both be the cheapest so far.
CrC Pikes
Wiggle's Pikes
I know for a fact that CrC sell theirs with NO shock pump, not sure about Wiggle as I am waiting for them to get back to me.
The shock pump is a definate need - Should I try and find another set that come with the pump? How much is one? Do I need a Rockshox specific one?

any shock pump will do as long as the gauge covers the range you need. and 20-30 squid."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

i had the dead moss 454's on my old reign and they are without question the best fork i have ever ridden. any old pump will do but you should expect to get one with the fork.0

Just received some new marzocchi's from crc,no shock pump included, and not even in a branded marzocchi box.......0
-
Excellent - Wiggle's do include the shock pump so they've got the deal. The 2 are basically the same price so its a no-brainer!0
-
And I have succeeded in messing it up!
Logged in and bought it online, was surprised when I didn't have to enter any payment details. Then afterwards I realised I must have had an account with Wiggle already, it put it through on an old card, now its taking ages to sort out.
Tip - If buying online make sure card details are up to date and correct. Also make sure you don't have an exisitng account with the website!0 -

That's not on. I bought my from All Terrain Cycles in Shipley. They came boxed in their factory packaging, with a pump - they come out of the factory like that so they should be supplied to you like that.
At least Wiggle have got it right on this one!0 -
Yes, they should really state if they are OE models or not. All after market ones are boxed and supplied with pumps.0
-
agreed, my revalations 426's came with a shock pump, come to thing of it so did my Tora 302 airs many moons ago also, I think that is the only way Rockshox do them, Marzocchi on the other hand i know do not supply shock pumps as they have low and high pressure ones for £30, they are not worth that though.0

Interesting...
I bought some PIKE 426 dual airs from Winstanleys and no shock pump was included.
As they are not quite 'top of the line' is this right?0 -
sounds like you have been had by Winstanleys Cheesey!!0

Nope, they should have been supplied with a pump if they were after-market forks.
Even my RS Mag 21's that I bought in 1991 had a pump provided!!0 -
I spoke to a couple of places about the shock pump issue.
The deal is this, if they are brand new and only made as an individual unit (ie not to be put on a bike) then they will come with a branded shock pump.
The forks that come with no shock pump wil still be brand new, they should stil come in a branded box, but they are bought in bulk to be put onto a particular bike. Some manufacturers buy in bulk to supply the demand for the bikes with that particular fork on there, and they "arrange" with the fork manufacturer what perks (or lack of perks) and going to be supplied with the fork.
Basically if you get a brand new fork with no shock pump, chances are its original intended use was to be supplied with a bike, not on its own. There can also be very subtle differences between some forks that are supplied for a bike and those that are sold individually on their own.
Its often not clear exactly what you are buying!0 -
Thats interesting GT,
Mine were brand new, in a branded box as you mentioned...
BUT
They were only £299.00 as opposed to everywhere elese that were selling them for £350 upwards....
Guess I can live with that!0 -
I rung a place where the pikes were a bit more expensive than they were at Wiggle or CrC and its just what they explained, it seems like it could be right, who knows.
Anyway Wiggle e-mailed at 7AM to say they have processed my order so I might get them tomorrow! I can not wait to get my hands on them.
I wonder if they'll come with the Maxle? Now that something I've not though of before now, they should do you'd have thought.0 -
Yes GT they do come with the Maxle and it's a revelation, well maybe a Pike...
They are great forks - you will love 'em!0 -
I can't wait - I have only ever experienced J3 Judy 80mm travel on my old GT. I tested out easy's revelations and they felt good - The pikes will be awesome!0
-
You will be as happy as a pig in the proverbial **** my friend!
Cant wait to hear your thoughts on them once you have ridden them!

If I can offer a few words of advise...
Follow the setup instructions in the manual carefully - they're pretty easy and give you a good starting point.
DON'T try to adjust the travel with the compression locked out. It won't do the fork any harm but it's not easy.
Keep a close eye on the negative air pressure. Some Pikes loose their negative pressure very quickly which can result in the forks topping out (easily detectable as a slight knocking sensation when you're climbing), but it's easily topped up anyway.
Don't store the bike upside down for any length of time. The Motion/Mission Control damping doesn't like being upside down.
Other than that, enjoy! My 2007 Pikes (again, 454 Air U-turns) are probably the single best upgrade that I've made to my bike!0 -
Thanks for your advice Dave - I will remember to follow your tips. Does the storing upside down apply to other RS forks with mission/motion control, and more importantly why does it not like being stored that way?0
-
oil passesabove the mission control stach efecting the use. IE it ca lock up or...
It is all covered in the manual. and how to bring it back to normal."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
