am i the only oerson who has poor lights on night rides because... if i spend hundreds on lights then its just a day ride, but dark around the edges??? Seriously night rides are better when you can hardly see anything... surely???

Ummmm.....
Been ages since I did a night ride, and that was with rubbish lights - enjoyable, but impossible to pick up any proper speed, consequently takes an exceedingly long time, the thrill of not knowing if you have missed something/fence/hedge is a bit of an adrenaline rush I guess.
Hope you are not right, as otherwise my ayup's will be a waste of money
Should be here tomorrow, and hope to get out on them one night this week.

Well I think you're a sado masochist, why don't you ride the wrong way up the motorway with or without lights!!! That might give you the rush you are after :!:
I''ve recently bought a light and motion logic light and am really impressed with it and still nearly wipe out on the downhills. My mate however is too tight to buy some decent lights and just follows me closely. However he does seem to have more fun although I often hear him grunting and cursing after i've hopped over a root or furrow!
You and him should get together maybe!!0 -
Lol - I have a GOOD light for MTB rides and very average lights on my commuter and on the short off road section of my commute I struggle to pick out the muddy bits. IMHO the better the lights you have the faster you'll go on better lines and the more fun you'll have.0

but isnt the point of a night ride to be really loose over the bike, let it carry you???
... and no, not a masochist, ha.i ride a hardtail0 -
My lights are nothing good, think they cost £80, and there not too bright! I love night riding, crap lights do add a sence of danger (i'd still have better lights if i had the money though)0

I have a Hope Vision LED light, its fantastic and well worth the money I paid for it. I understand the whole 'why make night into day' argument and I have to agree that amazingly bright lights do dampen the effect of night riding. I rarely use my light on its brightest setting for the same reason that I do like a challenge. However, I also like the knowledge that should I need a bright light showing me the way then I have that amount of light in spades!
For anything really technical, where safety becomes an issue, then a bright light becomes your new best friend. For fast twisty singletrack though, a mediocre amount of light makes things interesting and fun! Therefore the expensive lights with brightness/intensity variability are well worth their money (within reason!).Specialized Rockhopper '07
