I want to get a boxing style punch bag for the garage. Feel it could be a good way to improve upper body strength and relieve stress all at the same time. Has anyone got one of these? and what's the cheapest I could expect to pay for one? and from where? Does it need to be leather or would vinyl/ canvas do?

It depends on how you want it mounted. I didn't want to drill any holes, so got my brother the bag linked below. Can't comment on it yet I'm afraid, as it is his Christmas present, so hasn't been used yet.

That looks a good deal. gte yourslef some bag mitts though, otherwise your knuckles will be cut to ribbons in no time. I have a 4 ft bag in the garage and they do sway quite a bit when you let rip. Also, take some tips from boxing sites/coach because you can really injure tendons and ligaments.
I tell you what, I wouldn't like to think the bag's hitting me back after the grief it gets.
Good exercise, and a half hour walloping gets you in a good breathy, sweat!

I have both a tradional hanging heavy bag, and a free standing bag.

I much prefer the hanging bag, filled with sand, feels much mkore satisfying to hit and a better workout.

Okay reason i got a free standing was because at the time i didn't have the space to hang one, but could take the free standing outside, is only thick foam on a plastic core but is okay, bit more flexible though in where you can use it in my opinion

Further to above, I would prefer the hanging heavy bag, and the higher she hung the better.
Also she,s full of s##t and not sand, and instead of thick foam and plastc core, she was thick with a core of lead, titanium and carbon an Armadilo shell exterior, and just remember she is free.

4ft leather punch bag from argos (from £49) and training boxing gloves £28 also from argos (mitts where supplied with punch bags don't tend to survive long).

after 2 weeks getting your eye in you will be hitting the bag very hard, and therefore I recommend hanging the bag at suitable height (rather than getting a floor standing version) and going for robust leather kit rather than pvc etc.

Get some wraps for under the gloves as well, then you can hit the bag REALLY hard. If I don't use wraps I've found that I can still have bleeding knuckles even with gloves on. Also try and get the heaviest bag that you can, I'd imagine the one from Argos is light and will swing about like an ex-Iraqi general!!

A good tip for using the bag is to pretend you are actually fighting someone, duck imaginary punches, defending yourself, leaning in with your shoulder etc. If you do this you won't get so bored as just plugging away. Try doing 'rounds' as well, 3 mins and then rest for 2. I bet you'll be nearly pukeing before you reach 20 mins!!! enjoy.
