My commute has changed, can't afford a new bike.

My bike has room for mudguards and 28mm tyres. Would I be able to fit cyclo cross tyres if i took the mud guards off? I'm guessing 30 would be OK? Maybe 32 and 35?

is there more than 2mm clearance on the 28s?

If the the CX tyres don't fit then you could try 28mm conti top touring tyres - enough tread to handle mild trails, just not full-on mud.

It's surprising the amount of grip you can get from a touring tyre like a Swalbe Marathon without resorting to a full cross tyre. Make sure you allow some sort of clearance - if less that 3mm you'll find mud can build-up under the fork crown and grind you to a halt.

I got thoroughly fed up with conti top touring so I put 28mm cross tyres for a while on my tourer - with mudguards. If I'm not on a fast road bike I find I get tempted to check out off-road tracks so after riding a few of these practically sideways and occasionally on my @rse I got a pair of cross tyres and things were much better. I took them off recently to do a road ride to Wales and back - 230mile round trip so wanted lighter tyres on. Might put them back on though. They were definitely a lot less cumbersome than the contis. Down side - they wear down quite quick when used on the road.

I haven't tried a Schwalbe Marathon so can't comment but I definitely wasn't a fan of conti top touring. Like trying to pogo on a sledghammer, and about as much grip.
