My lbs had a zen 1 2006 for £400 really nice bike however it sold and they only had the 1.
the only bike that i like in the shop is a custom built balfa 2 step fr for £700
obvioulsy i cant get it and they wont build it at a lower spec for me
so what alternatives are there to the zen 1 ???
iv up to £500 to spend on a long travel hardtail ideally but i will look at full sus too

I would ignore most full suss bikes at this price - overly heavy, and usually under perform.
Not many LT hartails at this price that are decent.

Are you looking for more of an extreme xc hardtail or more of a freeride hardtail?
For extreme xc the zen range looks good.
for a freeride hardtail look at some of the norcos or the devinci kicker. They both look good.0
