I've seen a few people in Glasgow who lock their helmet to their bike at the station, to save having to carry it around. Does anybody here do that? Is it worth it, or do you find that vandalism is common?

  • I do occasionally, but generally it goes in the net helmet carrying bit on my pannier (which converts into a rucksack). Never had any problems... In my motorcycling days I almost always used to thread the lock through the chin part of my helmet and leave it there if the weather was decent, never had any vandalism but it's unpleasant if it rains unexpectedly!
Even if the voices aren't real, they have some very good ideas.
  • I nornmally put my helmet in my panniers, if I am going into the shops. but 9 times out of 10 I take helmet if I am in a place I don't know. when I have left it on the bike never had any vandalism so far
  • If I was a helmet wearer, which I'm not, I'd be wary of doing this, because what if your helmet got booted by someone or accidentally knocked by another bike, pram etc.

Wouldn't this negate the helmet's 'effectiveness', such as it is?

Or is the advice to buy a new helmet if it gets knocked merely another marketing ploy by the manufacturers?
